Area of triangles geometry - February 04, 2005

The GMAT Math sample question for the day is a geometry problem to find the area of a triangle.

Question
What is the area of an obtuse angled triangle whose two sides are 8 and 12 and the angle included between two sides is 1500?

A. 24 sq units
B. 48 sq units
C.
D.
E. Such a triangle does not exist

The correct choice is (A) and the correct answer is 24 sq units.

Explanatory Answer
If two sides of a triangle and the included angle 'y' is known, then the area of the triangle can be found using the formula


Substituting the values in the formula, we get


= 24 sq units
